Peace Round (memorized)
- Breathing at the end of phrases: Quarter note rest to breathe at the end of the first system; half note rest to breathe at the end of the second system.
Lord of the Dance (memorized)
- If you are going to be singing the descant, memorize it (don’t make one up)
Sussex Mummers (memorized)
Auld Lang Syne
- There is a new version handed out Wednesday
- We are using the IPA pronunciation; review this on the back of the music.
- Note that many “d’s” at the end of words are not voiced.
- Syne – “s” sound at the beginning, not “z”
- Second word of verse 2: change “here’s” to “there’s”
Alleluia (Memorize for 10/5)
- Memorize for next week.
- Grow in intensity with each repetition – louder and more marked at the end, especially basses.
- For now, practice with no ritard at the end – the brass may continue on.
Amazing Grace (New Britain)
- Sopranos should sing with a straight tone
- Third verse: Some sopranos are singing the tenor line in their range and some tenors are singing the treble line in their range.
- Verse 2 will be treble and tenor; for next week review verses 1 and 3
Promised Land
- Needs a straight tone and square, rhythmic feel.
- Nice solid attack at the beginning and for the beginning of each verse. Crescendo through that note to launch into the rest of the phrase.
- Verse 2 is softer, more gentle, and the following refrain continues that style. Decrescendo the last two measures of the verse.
- The refrain after verse 3 repeats; the first time is not as big, then bigger the last time
- End of the refrain – release after a half note to breathe and go on to the verses, except for the very last refrain.
- Altos, in verses 2 and 3 use word emphasis to make phrasing on your repeated notes
Wexford Carol
- There are four-bar phrases throughout. Note the places where altos don’t break – Altos will need to stagger breathing. Other voice parts — where altos have no break, think of your line as a continuous phrase, even though you have a lift in the middle.
- Place ending consonants at the end of phrases on the following rest.
- In measure 30, make a glottal between “back” and “alas”
- Sorry, I didn’t record who is singing what in the three-part split in S&A after B.
